The Venetians found creating dovecotes meant they would have meat and eggs but they would also garden with the collected droppings. \u00a0Over the centuries in these barren islands Tinos with it dovecotes is one of the lushest. The dovecotes or peristeriones were highly decorated with some houses looking rather romantically, just like a dovecote.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1892\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1892\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/merrington.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P1030834-480x640.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1892\" src=\"http:\/\/merrington.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P1030834-480x640.jpg\" alt=\"Dovecote house, Tinos\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/merrington.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P1030834-480x640.jpg 480w, https:\/\/merrington.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P1030834-480x640-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1892\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dovecote house, Tinos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Tuesday morning, we slipped away from Tinos town early and headed over to the island of Syros. \u00a0After days of 50 knot winds, we would have been lucky to have 5 knots for our journey.<\/p>\n<p>We motored into the sleepy harbour of Finikas, with it&#8217;s lovely marina, beautiful bay and beaches and only a short bus trip to Hermoupolis. \u00a0Hermoupolis is sacred to Hermes the god of commerce, this is the largest city in the Cyclades.
