What a cast of characters, over centuries of occupation by gods and man, Kos casts a spell of inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>In prime of place, is the Plane tree of Hippocrates, before the Asklepeion was built, Hippocrates taught his students &#8220;first do no harm&#8221; under the giant plane tree, near the waterfront.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2025\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2025\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/merrington.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P1040659-640x480.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2025\" src=\"http:\/\/merrington.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P1040659-640x480.jpg\" alt=\"Hippocrates' Plane Tree\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/merrington.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P1040659-640x480.jpg 640w, https:\/\/merrington.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P1040659-640x480-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/merrington.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P1040659-640x480-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2025\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hippocrates&#8217; Plane Tree<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hippocrates was a descendant of the god Asklepios, the god of healing. After Hippocrates death, the Asklepieion was built as a temple and hospital on a hill overlooking the sea and the coast of Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps there was a sanctuary to Apollo on the site but\u00a0by the 4th Century BC, there was a temple built to honour\u00a0Asklepieion.
